Hospital Corpsman Trauma Training

 

PURPOSE

 

Hospital Corpsman Trauma Training (HMTT) is designed to provide Hospital Corpsmen with a robust clinical experience in coordination with existing and future training partnerships with civilian trauma centers. This course will offer all E5 and below Corpsmen a training platform to prepare them for a future operational assignment. Corpsmen will receive hands on training and exposure to trauma patients, similar to those encountered on the battlefield and aboard ships.

SCOPE

Hospital Corpsman will work alongside civilian staff and military preceptors to gain hands-on experience providing care for critically injured patients. The course is comprised of formal didactic training, practical skills assessments, and clinical rotations. Upon completion of the training and within the individual's scope of practice, the member will be able to assess trauma injuries; recognize and intervene in the management of shock; perform trauma resuscitation procedures; perform continuous assessment and management of trauma patients; and apply the principles learned in a military environment. The training is conducted over a 7 week period to include holidays and weekends.
 

TRAINING LOCATIONS

There are currently four HMTT course locations:

1. Great Lakes Naval Station and John H. Stroger, Jr Hospital of Cook County, Chicago, Illinois
2. University of Florida Health (Shands), Jacksonville, Florida
3. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio
4. Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, North Carolina

All sites listed above have inner-city clinical training at Level One trauma centers. Once you are selected to attend HMTT, your training location will be determined based on the needs of the Navy. You cannot select your training location.

PREREQUISITES

Candidate must be E5 and below, HM-all NEC's, and should be within PCS window and in receipt of orders to Sea Duty or operational assignment. [B] Must be within Navy Physical Standards IAW OPNAVINST 6110.1 (Series) and have successfully completed current PFA cycle. [C] Must have a clear disciplinary record for previous 12 months (no non-judicial punishment/court-martial or serious civil court convictions). [D] Must have a current government travel charge card and be current with training.

The following immunizations must be up to date and will not expire during training: Rubella IGG titer; Rubeola IGG liter; Varicella IGG titer; Mumps IGG titer; Hepatitis B, Surface III Antibody titer (IGM titers are not acceptable); Tetanus immunization; PPD (two (2) within the last twelve months). [F] Must have the following training completed and will not expire during training: Basic Life Support; Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC); HIPAA; Current Fiscal Year Privacy Act Training online (Navy E-learning Course); All HMs that graduated HM "A" School on or after 13 Oct 2017 MUST have completed the HM PQS.

TRAVEL

Full per diem and travel will be provided to cover lodging, meals, and incidentals during this period. Cross-organizational funding will be provided.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Minimum security clearance requirement for government computer email/workstation/system access during training: Certified copy of JPAS record confirming valid security clearance of NACLC with SECRET eligibility or letter from Security Manager confirming pending upgrade/renewal for NACLC investigation with SECRET eligibility. Public Trust investigations with FAVORABLE eligibility does NOT meet the requirement for system access as specified by SECNAV M-5510.30 series. Upgrade for clearance eligibility must be initiated before candidate attends training.
