ASTC Norfolk is a detachment of the Navy Medicine Operational Training Command, Naval Survival Training Institute, NAS Pensacola FL, serving as the Training Agent for Aviation Survival Training and the subject matter experts on all military operational medicine. Students are provided safe, effective, fleet relevant aviation survival and human performance training focused on preventing the next mishap and increasing survivability. The training is conducted through didactic classroom lectures, in simulator based devices, and with a focus on practical application.

ASTC Norfolk provides and meets the aviation survival and safety requirements of all Naval Aviation and DoD activities. Through didactic classroom or squadron lectures, simulator devices and a curriculum that emphasizes hands-on exposure to survival skills, we offer the best survival training available to the Fleet.

CNAF M-36710.7 dtd 15 Jan 2023 no longer authorizes alternate training due to inoperative devices/inclement weather for refresher students. As such, any factor creating device unavailability will result in a letter of Conditionally Qualified (CQ) or Unqualified (UQ), dependent on the number of devices unavailable, and the student will have 90 days to the complete the deficient module(s). If device unavailability is the reason for Conditional Qualification and the individual is unable to return to the ASTC for completion of the deficient training module prior to a deployment, an extension until 30-days post-deployment may be requested. The approval authority for this type of extension is the aviation TYCOM, CMC, COMNAVAIRFORES, or command delegated this authority by TYCOM CMC or COMNAVAIRFORES, for their assigned units. Refer to Paragraph 8.4.4 of CNAF M-3710.7 regarding training waivers and extensions other than the deployment extension described above.

What to Bring:

NOTE!! Naval Aviation Survival Training is physically demanding, HIGH RISK and VOLUNTARY training. Students are STRONGLY advised to NOT participate in any vigorous or strenuous activity 48 hours prior to participation in training. Students are also advised to ensure they are well hydrated prior to training. Candidates may request a Training Time Out or Drop on Request at any time or for any reason.

Requirements for Training:

Medical Clearance:

All students for NASTP training must have the following:

  • Designated Aviators, Aircrew or Initial Aircrew Candidates must report with a current Aeromedical Clearance Notice (DD 2992). Any Non-Aircrew personnel must report with either, a DD 2992 or a Medical Clearance for Non-Aircrew / Non-Military Personnel (OPNAV 3710/18). "Up-Chits" must indicate that candidates are PQ and AA for Duty Involving Operational Flying, or clearly state PQ/AA for Naval Aviation Survival Training. A qualification letter will be issued at the completion of the course. Any NATOPs documentation will be made by the student's command.
  • All students shall be Medically Screened by questionnaire upon reporting to the ASTC.
 
Swim Qualifications:

All candidates for water survival training must be able to swim; documented by one of the following:

  • Previous NAPTP/NAWSTP Survival Program Qualification;
  • For Initial Aircrew candidates (NP2/N5) and Selected Passengers (NP3/N3), a U.S. Navy Second Class Swim qualification or better.
  • For Project Specialist (NP4/N4), Midshipmen (NP7/N2), and VIP (NP8/N2), a qualification of U.S. Navy Third Class swim qualification, or better.

NOTE: Individual candidate swim tests and screenings shall only be done during N-8 Training by prior appointment.

 

Training Start Time:

 All Initial and Refresher Classes normally begin at 0730 sharp. Please be at the ASTC NO LATER THAN 0715 for Check-in, Medical Screening and Record Checks.
 
NOTE! Please be on time. Students reporting AFTER 0715 may forfeit their seats to stand-by students and may be rescheduled.
 
NOTE! No open sores, wounds, scabs, or bandages are allowed in the pool, to include recent small pox vaccinations. Any student with this issue will be rescheduled to a later date.

 

Uniform of the Day:

  • All students must report in uniform.
    • Flight suits are accepted and encouraged.
    • Utilities are acceptable.
    • Class C uniforms are always acceptable.
  • Do Not report for training in civilian clothing or inappropriate uniform attire (Organizational clothing, PT gear, work clothes, etc.)

Bring a towel, swimsuit, and contact lenses kit, if needed (Swim goggles are NOT authorized for any Water testing evolutions). Typically, pool evolutions are conducted on the SECOND day, however, be prepared to be in the pool on both days.

 

Directions:

From the North/Peninsula

Take Interstate 64 East through the Hampton Roads Bridge/Tunnel. You will cross two bridges after passing through the tunnel. After you cross the second bridge, take the exit marked "4th View, Ocean View" (Exit 273). At the end of the off-ramp, turn right. Go about 20 yards and follow the road to the left. Do not turn off this road; the name changes several times (4th View, Rippard, Ridgewell). Government Housing and the base remain on your right at all times. At the first stop sign, turn right onto First View. At the first stop light, turn right onto Bay Avenue. Bay Avenue will take you through Gate 4. Immediately inside Gate 4 on your left is a display of aircraft in a courtyard. The Aviation Survival Training Center (ASTC) is the first building on the left. Parking is available in the front and to the side of the building.

From the South/Virginia Beach

Take Interstate 64 West. Take Exit 274, "Naval Air Sta, Bay Avenue". The road you end up on is Bay Avenue. Merge into the left lane and go through Gate 4. Immediately inside Gate 4 on your left is a display of aircraft in a courtyard. The Aviation Survival Training Center (ASTC) is the first building on the left. Parking is available in the front and to the side of the building.

From Norfolk International Airport

Exit airport and follow signs to Interstate 64 West to Richmond. Take Exit 274, "Naval Air Sta, Bay Avenue". The road you end up on is Bay Avenue. Merge into the left lane and go through Gate 4. Immediately inside Gate 4 on your left is a display of aircraft in a courtyard. The Aviation Survival Training Center (ASTC) is the first building on the left. Parking is available in the front and to the side of the building.
