Forward Deployable Preventive Medicine Unit (FDPMU)

Purpose
  • We manage the Navy FDPMU program. Included within this responsibility is training, equipping and preparing support doctrine related to the FDPMU program, as directed in BUMEDINST 5450.157B. The FDPMUs are one of Navy Medicine’s deployable medical systems sponsored by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as directed in OPNAVINST 5450.215C. These units identify, evaluate, and monitor diseases, injuries and hazards in environments that threaten the health of deployed US Forces. NMCPHC is the only command in the Department of the Navy with the technical competency to manage and train these units.
  • The FDPMU provides rapidly deployable, portable, flexible and sustainable force health protection (FHP) services to forward deployed elements of the Navy and Marine Corps through the advent of state-of-the-art detection and diagnostic equipment, and real-time analytical capabilities.
  • FDPMUs can be deployed to meet other Service’s FHP requirements, or to support a Joint Task Force Commander when requested through official channels.
  • FDPMU capabilities include environmental health hazard (including chemical, biological, radiological, and physical agents) assessment, evaluating the risk of adverse health outcomes, monitoring the health of deployed forces, advising the operational commander of significant health risks, and recommending interventions.
  • FDPMUs can be task-organized to meet any contingency and adapted to operate from land bases or mobile platforms afloat.
  • NMCPHC maintains four deployable FDPMU to support operational requirements.
