Brooklyn, New York City, New York State, USA --- Original caption: 12/1/1957-Brooklyn, NY: The first Hungarian refugees to be brought to the United States by ship throng the rail of the Naval Transport General LeRoy Eltinge for their first close-up look at America at the Brooklyn Army Terminal here Jan. 1. The 1,748 passengers are the first of the expected 5,100 escapees to be brought here in the sealift phase of "Project Safe Haven" before the end of January.
