Command Master Chief May enlisted in the Navy on August 1996 and subsequently graduated recruit training at Navy Basic Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois followed by completion of Machinist’s Mate “A” and “C” School in Groton, Connecticut.
  
He reported to his first duty station, PCU Louisiana SSBN-743, in June 1997.  While onboard, he conducted a change of home port to Kings Bay, Georgia, completed 3 Strategic Deterrent Patrols and qualified in Submarine Warfare.
In July 2000, he transferred to USS Louisville SSN-724 where he advanced to Second and First Class Petty Officer.  While onboard, he completed 2 Western Pacific Deployments while taking part in Fifth Fleet Combat Operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
 
MM1 May reported to USS Georgia SSGN-729 in May 2007 as the Auxiliary Division Leading Petty Officer.  During his tour, he completed the conversion of Georgia from a Ballistic Missile to Guided Missile submarine and was advanced to both Chief and Senior Chief Petty Officer.

His next sea assignment was onboard USS Florida SSGN-728 as the Auxiliary Division Leading Chief Petty Officer.  Senior Chief May completed 3 forward deployed mission cycles and qualified Chief of the Boat.

In April 2018 Senior Chief May reported to USS Henry M. Jackson SSBN-730 as Chief of the Boat.  He completed 2 Strategic Deterrent Patrols and was awarded the COMSUBRON 17 Battle Efficiency “E”.  In July of 2019 he was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer.
 
Master Chief May’s next assignment was onboard USS Ohio SSGN-726 as Chief of the Boat.  During his tour, he completed 2 forward deployed Western Pacific Deployments, was awarded the COMSUBRON 19 Battel Efficiency “E” and was selected for the Command Master Chief Program.

He assumed his current position as Command Master Chief, NMRTC Bremerton in March 2022.  He has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal (5^th Award), Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (5^th Award) and numerous unit and service medals.  He is most proud of the performance of the Officers and crew onboard USS Henry M. Jackson and USS Ohio for their exceptional performance in earning the Battle Efficiency “E” award. He is qualified to wear Submarine Warfare and Navy Scuba Diver underwater insignia.  He is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy and Chief of the Boat / Command Master Chief courses.
