HMCM Matthews
Master Chief Hospital Corpsman (SW/AW/FMF/IW) Mary A. Matthews
Command Master Chief, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Twentynine Palms

Master Chief Matthews is a native of Gibson, Louisiana. She enlisted in the United States Navy on the 7th of January 1997 and attended basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL. After completing recruit training, she reported to Hospital Corpsman “A” School, also in Great Lakes, IL.
Her first duty station was National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland and she deployed onboard USNS Comfort in support of humanitarian missions to Lithuania.  Master Chief was advanced to Hospital Corpsman Third Class.  In 2000 she attended Psycho-neurological Technician ‘C’ school in Fort Sam Houston, Texas and was meritoriously advanced to Hospital Corpsman Second Class. She then accepted an assignment to the Behavioral Health Unit at Naval Medical Center (NMCP) Portsmouth, VA. 

In 2003, she was selected to fill a critical manning gap onboard USS Harry S Truman.  While on Truman, she qualified as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist.  In 2006 Master Chief attended Field Medical Service School (FMSS) in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  After graduating FMSS, she accepted an additional assignment to NMCP as a member of the Marine Corps Detachment.  During her second tenure at NMCP she served as Directorate for Mental Health Leading Petty Officer and as a member of the Special Psychiatric Rapid Intervention Team (SPRINT).  She was forward deployed to Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan in support of OIF/OEF where she qualified Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist. 

Master Chief Matthews was selected to Chief Petty Officer and graduated Recruit Division Commander ‘C’ school in 2010 at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, IL.  She transferred to Fleet Surgical Team ONE (FST1) in July of 2014, and was advanced to the rank of Senior Chief and qualified Enlisted Information Dominance Warfare Specialist.  Following her tour at FST, she accepted orders to serve the Navy’s largest TYCOM as the AIRPAC Force Alcohol & Drug Control Officer.  She then accepted orders to serve as the Senior Enlisted Leader for 23rd Dental Company located in Twentynine Palms, CA and was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer.  In a change-of-charge ceremony on July 30, 2021, HMCM Matthews became Command Master Chief for Navy Medical Readiness & Training Center, Twentynine Palms.   

Her accomplishments include the following:  Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5), Good Conduct Medal (7), Associates of Arts and Bachelor of Arts; American Military University, Master Training Specialist and a host of other service and personal awards.
