Environmental Physiology

Modern conflicts have taken warfighters around the globe, placing them in diverse climates that range from oppressive heat and humidity to subfreezing temperatures...

Biobehavioral Sciences

Our biobehavioral research seeks to understand the unique and combined characteristics that influence performance and readiness in military personnel...

Sleep, Endurance, and Fatigue Risk Management

Sleep loss and fatigue compromise the performance, health, and safety of warfighters. To maximize the operational readiness and resilience of our armed forces, the Sleep and...

Readiness & Resilience

We conduct operationally relevant research to support modern expeditionary and special forces and traditional ground forces by focusing on...

Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation

Preventing injuries and rehabilitating wounded warfighters are two important areas of our research that support the health and readiness of our military. Our scientists focus...

FUEL

The Food Utilization and Energy Lab (FUEL) team’s mission is to conduct research to support operational readiness by elucidating the impact of nutritional decisions on warfighter performance, health, and readiness.

Expeditionary Medical Research

Our Expeditionary Medical Research team studies mechanisms of injury and their effects, causes of illness, and casualty care and treatment from point of injury through definitive care to identify factors and best practices that improve health outcomes, quality of life, and operational readiness for our warfighters.

Medical Planners’ Toolkit (MPTk)

MPTk predicts the likelihood of operational injuries and illnesses, creates casualty estimates and associated patient streams, and estimates requirements relative to theater hospitalization to service those patient streams.

Modeling & Simulation

Our Modeling and Simulation team create tools to equip military medical planners, providers, trainers, and logisticians with the capability to examine various expeditionary courses of action before, during, and after deployment. The tools can be used to more effectively estimate casualties, assess operational risk, allocate resources, and determine mission readiness.

Joint Medical Planning Tool (JMPT)

Before the development of JMPT, medical planners and logisticians lacked the means to assess the adequacy of medical support for military operations.

We promote operational readiness by providing military leaders and logisticians with data-driven science and proven methodologies that supports decision-making with evidence-based, actionable analysis.

Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database (EMED)

The Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database (EMED) provides comprehensive and accurate injury, clinical, and tactical data necessary to support NHRC’s Medical Modeling and Simulation tools and improve medical mission readiness.

Veteran and Active Duty Longitudinal Outcomes Research (VALOR) Program

The Veteran and Active Duty Longitudinal Outcomes Research (VALOR) Program
conducts multidisciplinary research on physical and psychological outcomes of
warfighters throughout their lifetime. Through our research, and the contributions of our
participants, we aim to share findings that can influence health policies on screening,
prevention, and intervention practices. Our ultimate goal is to contribute to improved
quality of life, wellness, readiness, and performance of active duty service
members and veterans.

Wounded Warrior Recovery Project (WWRP)

The Wounded Warrior Recovery Project is a 15-year, population-based study examining
the long-term patient-reported outcomes among U.S. service members injured during
deployment. Participants are active duty and veteran Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air
Force, Reserve, and National Guard personnel.
