Captain Barry, the youngest son of a career Army Officer and a civilian Registered Nurse was born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His father’s career took him and his family around the world, finally settling in the National Capitol region where his father retired from the Army. He attended the University of Maryland College Park, College Park, Maryland where he graduated in 1996 with Bachelor of Science degree in Neurobiology and Physiology. In 2002, he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earning a Doctorate of Osteopathy. In 2015, he completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Virginia.

LT Barry reported to his first duty station, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Virginia. He completed a Surgical Internship and upon graduation in 2003, received orders to the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute as a Student Naval Flight Surgeon. He completed the training in 2004 and earned the Navy Flight Surgeon designation and subsequently received orders to the Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. He served as the Flight Surgeon and General Medical Officer for one year and participated in combat support flight operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In 2005, LT Barry received orders to Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he held the positions of the Medical Department Head and Senior Flight Surgeon, Carrier Air Wing 1. While assigned to CVW-1, he deployed twice aboard the USS Enterprise in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and earned the Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer Qualification. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 2008 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth while attending a General Surgery residency program. LCDR Barry completed three of the five training years and due to a change in personal priorities, changed his career path. In 2010, he returned to Naval Air Station Oceana, this time as part of Carrier Air Wing 3, and served as the Senior Flight Surgeon until 2012. Soon after completing those orders, he was accepted to the Emergency Medicine residency program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and graduated from the program in 2015.

He reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan, where he served as MEU Surgeon, and earned the Fleet Marine Force Warfare Officer Qualification. After successfully completing the tour in Okinawa, CDR Barry transferred to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Twentynine Palms, Twentynine Palms, California, in 2017 where he served as the Director of Branch Clinics, the Director of Medical Services, and the Corps Advisor for both the Medical and Dental Corps staff. In 2020, CDR Barry reported as the Group Surgeon, 2d Marine Logistics Group, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While stationed there he served as the Task Force Surgeon, Quantico, Virginia, for Operation Allies Welcome where he led a Joint Medical and Interagency Partner team charged with providing the medical and dental care and conducting the Customs and Immigration screening exams for over 5,000 Afghan evacuees. In 2022, CDR Barry reported as the Force Surgeon, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While there he directly supported the medical planning and execution for Nordic Response 24, the largest NATO-led exercise in 10 years and served to certify II MEF as a Joint Task Force Capable Headquarters.

CAPT Barry is a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and an Assistant Professor to the Uniformed Services University Medical School at Bethesda, Maryland. He has published 4 scientific articles, and 6 scientific abstracts. He is married, and his wife is a Navy nurse who is serving as a staff Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at Expeditionary Medical Facility Kilo, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

He currently serves as the Executive Officer, Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command, Camp Pendleton, California.

CAPT Barry’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (4), Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), and qualifications for Fleet Marine Force Warfare Officer, Flight Surgeon, and Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer.
