NDC Ryan M. Murphy
Senior Enlisted Leader

Chief Navy Diver Ryan M. Murphy hails from Seattle, Washington. He graduated from the Carson Long Military Institute in New Bloomfield, PA in 1999 and reported to Recruit Training Command in November of 2005. Upon graduating from the Navy’s Basic Engineering Common Core pipeline, he reported aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72).
 
Murphy served as a damage controlman onboard CVN72 from 2006 to 2007, during which he completed a six-month deployment in the Pacific Fleet area of operations. Shortly after qualifying Advanced Damage Control, he attended the Navy Diver preparation course in Great Lakes, IL, and was subsequently accepted to the Naval Diving Salvage and Training Center (NDSTC) in Panama City, FL.

In January 2008, Murphy graduated as a Second Class Diver from NDSTC and reported to his first assignment at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) in Everett, WA. While there, he deployed to Thailand as a member of a Battle Damage Repair Team, where he instructed Royal Thai Navy Divers in all phases of safe diving operations during Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Thailand.

In 2011, he transferred to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Five (EODMU 5) in Guam. Assigned to EOD platoon 522, his platoon supported Carrier Strike Group FIVE, and while deployed, contributed to Operation Damayan, where he aided displaced Filipino citizens in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

Murphy attended First Class Dive School in 2014. Upon graduation, he reported to Naval Research Laboratory Sea Component in Port Hueneme, CA, as an Unlimited Diving Supervisor, where he planned and supervised multifaceted deck and diving evolutions in harsh environments, and routinely dove in high-risk environmental conditions.

Murphy reported to Naval Submarine School, Groton, CT in September 2017, where he served as the Leading Petty Officer and High-Risk Instructor at the Pressurized Submarine Escape Training (PSET) facility. Murphy is currently stationed at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL), also in Groton, where he served as the Dive Department’s Leading Chief Petty Officer from April 2022 until January 2025, when he assumed the duties and responsibilities as the command’s Senior Enlisted Leader.
 
Murphy’s educational accomplishments include an associate’s degree in Fire Science from Lakes Region Community College, and a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Columbia College.
 
Murphy’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards).
