CDR Johnson was raised in San Diego, CA. He is a graduate of Pomona College (BA, 2002), the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine (MD, 2007; MTM&H, 2013), and the U.S. Naval War College (MA, 2022). He completed postgraduate training at the National Naval Medical Center (internship in Internal Medicine) and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (residency in Preventive Medicine).

CDR Johnson has served in billets that span the continuum of Navy Medicine. Prior assignments include III Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, a faculty tour at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit TWO, Naval Hospital Okinawa, and the Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command. He deployed in support of disaster recovery efforts during Operation Tomodachi (2011) and humanitarian assistance provided during Continuing Promise (2017).

CDR Johnson has held numerous leadership positions, serving as Department Head, Assistant Officer in Charge, Deputy Director, and Director. Over three Public Health Emergency Officer tours, he coordinated responses to ensure uninterrupted installation, region, and operational forces readiness during the Zika Virus, COVID-19, and MPOX pandemics. He currently serves as Specialty Leader for Navy Preventive Medicine.

CDR Johnson is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine and holds the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers’ Health. He has authored fifteen peer-reviewed scientific publications and textbook chapters focusing on controlling infectious diseases of military significance. CDR Johnson is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine, a Delta Omega Public Health Honors Society member, and the 2017 recipient of the Rear Admiral Charles S. Stephenson Award for Excellence in Navy Occupational Health, Preventive Medicine, and Health Promotion. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal. He is married to Rebecca Johnson, an active-duty Navy Pathologist. They have two amazing children, Madeleine and Achilles.
