CAPT Maria C. Coon, MSC, USN

Executive Officer​
 

Capt. Coon has dedicated over three decades to Navy Medicine and the Military Health System, serving in key leadership roles that have shaped policy, strengthened operational readiness, and advanced healthcare delivery across diverse platforms and commands.
 
Her naval career began on September 9, 1991, when she enlisted as a Hospital Corpsman. She was commissioned as a Medical Service Corps Officer in March 2000 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and a Master of Business Administration.
 
Capt. Coon’s officer career began at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where she served as Manager of Health Information Management Services and later as the Health Care Administrator for the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Service Line. In 2003, she reported to Naval Hospital Sigonella, Italy, where she led the Patient Administration Department and served as the Managed Care Officer.
 
In 2006, she transitioned to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as a policy subject matter expert in Patient Administration (PAD). She continued shaped the PAD community in 2008 as Director of the PAD Course at the Navy Medical Education and Training Command and she served as Assistant PAD Specialty Leader before becoming the Specialty Leader from 2011 to 2019, and oversaw the professional development, assignment and community health of PAD officers Navy-wide.  In 2012, Captain Coon was selected for the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs Fellowship with VA Integrated Healthcare Network Five. She later served as the VA/DoD Liaison Officer at the Defense Health Agency (DHA) National Capital Region (NCR), Deputy Chief for Cost Assessment and Program Evaluations, and Chief of Market Analysis and Evaluation for the NCR Enhanced Multi-Service Market.  In 2014, she became Chief of Patient Administration at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Her executive leadership roles continued as Director for Administration at Naval Health Clinic Quantico (2016), Naval Hospital Pensacola (2019), and Navy Medicine Operational Training Command (2023). At Pensacola, she also served as Director for Platform Support for Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command and Executive Officer of Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF) Lima Platform.  In 2021, she was hand-selected as Director for Resource Operations at DHA Tidewater Market Headquarters in Portsmouth, Virginia. Across her assignments, she has gained expansive expertise in patient administration, logistics, information systems, facilities, healthcare operations, emergency response, manpower, planning and strategy.
 
Capt. Coon’s operational experience includes deployments to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as Medical Regulating Control Officer with NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit, and to Kuwait as Patient Administration Officer for EMF Detachment Lima in support of Operations New Dawn and Enduring Freedom. As EMF Lima Executive Officer, she led over 400 personnel and maintained a 150-bed theater hospitalization capability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she directed the mobilization of 72 sailors, forming Navy Medicine’s first Acute Care Team and four Rural Rapid Response Teams deployed across Texas.
 
Her personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6), Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5), and Army Achievement Medal. She is a lifetime member of the Interagency Institute for Federal Healthcare Executives.
