CAPT Bridgette D. Ferguson was born in Hamilton, Ohio and enlisted in the Navy in May 1989. She obtained a Bachelor's in Arts Degree from the University of Maryland, University College in 1995. In 1998, she was one of 40 candidates selected Navy-wide for the Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program. She reported to Towson University, Towson, Maryland, where she earned her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing and received her commission as a Nurse Corps Officer in May 2000.
After completing Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island, CAPT Ferguson reported to the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) as a Staff Nurse on the Medical Surgical ward, followed by a year on the Mother Infant Care Unit, and then served as the Charge Nurse of the Ambulatory Procedures Unit. She was then selected to pre stage the USNS COMFORT prior to activation and deployed as the Charge Nurse of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit on the USNS COMFORT in direct support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2002. CAPT Ferguson was then stationed in Naples, Italy, serving initially as the Charge Nurse for the Multi-Service Patient Care Unit and then as the Division Officer and OB Program Manager for the Family Medicine Clinic. During her tour in Naples; she served as the Junior Enlisted Advisory Board Facilitator, Command Fitness Leader, Multi-Cultural Events Coordinator, Medical Enlisted Commission Program Coordinator, and member of the Command Assessment Team. While in Naples, she completed her Master's in Human Relations with a concentration in Counseling from the University of Oklahoma. She was then selected for Duty Under Instruction and completed a dual Master's (a blended role program) from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. as a Community Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and Family Nurse Practitioner in May 2009. CAPT Ferguson returned to NNMC in June 2009 and served as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Integrated Clinical Coordinator during the BRAG transition period. In 2011, upon the dedication of the medical center as the newly integrated Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), she took on the role of Deputy Director of the Nurse Residency Program where she instructed 400 Army and Navy nurses. She served as a Special Assistant to the Director as the Command Managed Equal Opportunity Officer (CMEO) for 4,000 personnel. CAPT Ferguson then transferred to the Washington Navy Yard, where she served as the Officer in Charge and Recorder of the Physical Evaluation Board for the Secretary of the Navy Council of Review Board. In this role, she provided direct leadership and management over her team which annually processed 13,000 cases for Wounded, Ill and Injured Sailors and Marines through the Integrated Disability Evaluation System. She served as an Adjudicator of the Naval Disciplinary Board of Review (NDRB). As a voting member of the NDRB, she researched, prepared, and presented discharge upgrade requests submitted by. former Navy. and Marine Corps service members, ensuring adjudication of concerns based on propriety and equity. She also continued to mentor junior nurses and perform clinical hours at Walter Reed Bethesda during this time. CAPT Ferguson then returned to WRNMMC and served as the Special Assistant to the Director for Nursing for Pathway to Excellence and Department Chief of the Med-Surg and Behavioral Health units. As the Special Assistant, she provided direct leadership and management of 1,500 nurses in Nursing Excellence. She led WRNMMC to be designated as the first and only DoD joint MTF as Pathway to Excellence and received the International Daisy Nurse Leader Award. As Department Chief, she managed and advised 240 personnel, fostering a culture of well-being and positive working environment for her staff. Then, CAPT Ferguson served as Interim Executive Officer (XO) and the Director of Health Services at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Annapolis, she provides direct leadership and management to 240 personnel in 3 different geographic locations. She is a guest lecturer for American Nurses Credentialing Center. CAPT Ferguson is continuing her studies at Northcentral University for a Doctor of Business Administration in Organizational Leadership and Management. She is currently serving as the Executive Officer for Navy Medicine Training Support Center - the “Quarterdeck of Navy Medicine”, in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. CAPT Ferguson’s personal decorations include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Daisy Nurse Leader Award, and various other service and unit awards. She is an active member of the Academy Medical-Surgical Nurses, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
