SEXUAL HEALTH AND RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAM (SHARP) TRAINING

Description:

SHARP Training is designed to increase the competence and confidence of people who will speak with Sailors, Marines and family members about sexual health and responsibility. Our goal is to provide no-cost distance learning for educators, instructors and speakers, plus specialized training for health care providers and counselors.

All courses are free to DOD affiliated individuals.

NMCPHC Courses:

• HIV PrEP Lecture - 1 hour. Familiarize health care providers and health care support professionals with the HIV prevention strategy of HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Students learn the basics of HIV PrEP, HIV risk profiles in DoD, patient eligibility for PrEP, patient management, operational and clinical challenges and HIV PrEP promotion.
• HIV-STI Prevention Counseling - 16 hours. Improve the ability of providers in a variety of settings to support individuals in making behavior changes that will reduce their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases. Target audience: Corpsmen, nurses, Preventive Medicine and Public Health Technicians, PM Representatives and PM Petty Officers, counselors, and public health educators, who are tasked to counsel individuals regarding sexual behavioral risk reduction.
• STI 101 for Non-Clinicians - 4 hours. Increase basic understanding about sexually transmitted infections among non-clinical public health professionals, health educators, health promoters, community leaders, clergy, parents, program volunteers and individuals.
• Promoting Sexual Health in Military Populations - 4 hours. Prepare leaders, health professionals, clergy and volunteers to plan and execute effective community strategies to reduce sexual risk behavior within military communities. Target audience: Military leaders, health promoters, preventive medicine and public health professionals, chaplains, school nurses, clinicians, Independent Duty Corpsmen, family counselors, peer educators.
• Sexual Partner Counseling and Referral - 5 Hours. Students learn the four referral options and 11-step partner referral process. Military-specific circumstances and issues are explored. Students use role-plays to improve their one-on-one counseling skills of working with patients to bring their partners to testing and treatment. Target audience: Physicians, Independent Duty Corpsmen, nurses, Preventive Medicine and Public Health Technicians and Officers, PM Representatives, PMTs and Family Counselors. The detailed sexual partner services guideline may also be used as a self-study course.
• Sexual Risk Assessment for Navy Clinicians - 1 hour. Do health care providers assess the sexual health of their patients during routine encounters as recommended by the Institutes of Medicine and US Preventive Services Task Force? A number of recent studies suggest they often do not. For example, a study reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine revealed that only 28% of adults who had a routine check-up in the past year reported being asked about STDs during that visit. These and other data demonstrate that providers are missing opportunities to identify, diagnose and treat STIs, and to identify and intervene in risky sexual behavior. Health care providers can and should speak with all their sexually active adolescent patients and adult patients with risk about their sexual health. But how does the provider go about this task? Who should bring it up? What are the "right" questions to ask? What advice should be given? How much time will this take? This lecture introduces and demonstrates a model for brief sexual risk assessment and prevention counseling. Target Audience: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurses, Independent Duty Corpsmen.
