SAN DIEGO (April 11, 2026) USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) returns to port after recovering NASA’s Artemis II crew and their spacecraft, Integrity. Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) supported post-flight engineering and science activities for the ‘A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response’ (AVATAR) project. AVATAR studied four bone marrow organ chips made from tissue donated from each of the Artemis II crew, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. AVATAR examined the impact of microgravity and radiation exposure on human cell biology in deep space and represents a historic milestone as the first organ chip experiment deployed beyond Earth's Van Allen Belts. SAN DIEGO (April 11, 2026) Jason Rexroat, with Space Tango, transports a samples of bone marrow organ chips from the ‘A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response’ (AVATAR) investigation to Naval Health Research Center (NHRC)’s operational laboratory. The samples were received from the NASA Exploration Ground Systems team after the 10-day Artemis II mission around the Moon in the Orion capsule. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School simulate casualty care with high fidelity manikins and using hyper realistic special effects makeup called moulage during training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina Feb. 16, 2023. NSOMI, a detachment of NMOTC, specializes in training the enlisted service members and medical providers who support US special operations. Enlisted service members who completed the courses will specialize in trauma management, infectious diseases, cardiac life support and surgical procedures, with a basic understanding of veterinary medicine and dental medicine.
