CAPTAIN MICHAEL M. TILLER, MC
Commanding Officer

CAPT Michael Tiller, a Wisconsin native, attended the University of Dallas in Texas and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990. He completed his medical degree in 1997 at Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, IL., and matched in General Surgery Residency.  While in residency at New York Medical College, New York City in 2001, Tiller accepted a direct commission as a lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps. He completed his residency in 2002 and entered active naval service as a staff general surgeon at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples, Italy.

From 2004 to 2016, Tiller served in the following units: USNH Naples, National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) Bethesda, Naval Medical Research Center, and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in the National Capitol Region (NCR). Fleet Marine Force (FMF) qualified, he deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.  These deployments included Al Qaim Iraq 2005-2006, Al Taquadum, Rawah and Mosul Iraq in 2008, Kunduz Afghanistan in 2010-2011, and ERSS 13 supporting operations from the Arabian Gulf to the Horn of Africa in 2014.

In 2016, Tiller completed a tour as Deputy Director of Surgery at Fort Belvoir and the Navy competitively selected him for advanced trauma training. He completed his fellowship in 2018 at the University of Pennsylvania in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

Tiller reported to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio in 2018 as a research physician. Additionally, he worked as a Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon at Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio. In 2019, he led the largest Naval Expeditionary Medical Unit supporting Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Iraq.

Returning to San Antonio, Tiller rejoined staff at BAMC and served as the Trauma Service Liaison Officer between the Trauma Service at BAMC and the ISR Burn Center in addition to his assignment as NAMRU San Antonio’s Deputy Director of Combat Casualty Care and Expeditionary Resuscitative Medicine.

In May 2023, Tiller reported as Deputy Commander, Naval Medical Research Command. He assumed the duties as Commanding Officer of NAMRU San Antonio on March 2025.

CAPT Tiller has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and NATO Medal, as well as other unit and campaign awards (Afghanistan, Iraq and OIR).
