Commander Nicholas Hamlin
Executive Officer
Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio

 
CDR Hamlin a native of both Yuma, AZ, and San Diego, CA. He attended California State University, Northridge (BA, Biology, 2001), University of California, San Diego (PhD, Biology, 2005), and University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry (DDS, 2009).  He enlisted under the Navy’s Heath Services Collegiate Program in July 2005 and received his commission upon graduation from dental school in June 2009.
Following completion of Officer Development School in Newport, RI, CDR Hamlin reported to Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he completed Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) training. 
While completing residency training in Comprehensive Dentistry at the Air Force Postgraduate Dental School, Joint Base San Antonio–Lackland from June 2013 to June 2015, CDR Hamlin earned a Master of Science in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
 
Previous assignments include serving as a Research Dentist and Department Head for Environmental Surveillance, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU San Antonio) from September 2015 to May 2019, where he also headed the Navy’s lead agency for dental mercury abatement.  From August 2010 to May 2013, he served as a general dentist at Naval Branch Health Clinic, Kings Bay, GA, with an Individual Augmentee assignment to Joint Task Force – Guantanamo, Joint Medical Group, from March to September 2011.
CDR Hamlin most recently served as Chairman, Research Department, Naval Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS), Naval Medical Leader and Professional Development Command (NMLPDC) from JUNE 2019 to April 2024.  He served as Specialty Leader for Dental Research to Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) from July 2020 to June 2024, and as NPDS Interim Associate Dean from March 2022 to February 2023. 
CDR Hamlin has served on multiple USUHS Postgraduate Dental College committees, including the Research Committee, chair of the Committee on Appointments and Promotions, and member of the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs Search Committee. CDR Hamlin has been an invited lecturer in the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine’s Faculty Development Program.
CDR Hamlin, a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry, and a Professor in the Postgraduate Dental College, USUHS, currently serves as the Executive Officer of Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio.
His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star, and various service awards.
