We provide a number of services to reduce risk on deployments. We apply repellent to uniforms, assist drafting contingency pest control plans and review force health protection plans.
We assist and support pest control efforts aboard ships and on shore-based installations throughout the Western United States.
Q: Which uniforms can be treated?A: We treat the NWU (Type I, II, and III) and civilian clothes that are at least 50% cotton. We cannot treat items that have been factory pretreated. This information will be located on the tag on the inside of the item.
Q: I think we may have a bed bug infestation. What signs should I look for?A: Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices in beds, mattress seams, and nearby furniture during the day. They will defecate in these harborages, leaving behind small black stains. Not all people have visible symptoms when bitten, so it is important to look for them in their daytime hiding spots.
Q: What can we do to prevent/control cockroach infestations?A: Cockroaches need food, water, harborage, and warmth to thrive. Proper sanitation goes a long way in limiting their numbers. Crumbs, food scraps, and standing water should be promptly cleaned up.
Q: Which rodents can transmit hantavirus to humans?A: Only deer mice of the genus Peromyscus can transmit hantavirus to humans.
Clinical guidance, including recognition, management and clinical isolation guidance are generally covered by CDC: CDC Clinical Overview
Clinical management for Fleet medical personnel can be found in the NMCFHPC Fleet Mpox Medical Guidance
Clinical guidance for MTFs can be found in the DHA Mpox Guidance Update_5Sept2024
Currently, neither mpox testing nor treatment are readily available in a forward deployed operational setting. Units should identify suspected cases, isolate them, and move them for care at an MTF when operationally feasible.
