INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE

Baseline Surveys

Baseline Industrial Hygiene surveys are required on all new construction ships. We carefully look at jobs that could be harmful and give recommendations to make them safer.

Periodic Surveys

Periodic Industrial Hygiene surveys are required at least every two years. We address changes in shipboard operations that could affect the safety of personnel. Other industrial hygiene services provided:

  • Exposure Monitoring and Dosimetry
  • Sound Level Measurements
  • Ventilation / Air Quality Assessments
  • Respirator Fit-Testing (commands without RPPM)
  • Mold, Lead and Asbestos Sampling
  • Occupational Safety & Health Program Training

FAQs

  • Q: How often is the Industrial Hygiene survey required?
A periodic Industrial Hygiene survey is required every 24 months per OPNAVINST 5100.19 Series A3.

  • Q: Do you need to get underway for the Industrial Hygiene survey?
A: An underway period is required when a ship has undergone major engineering changes or it's been 4 or more years since the last noise survey was conducted.

  • Q: How long do you need to complete the periodic Industrial Hygiene survey?
A: Typically, CG's, DDG's, FFG's, MCM's, and USNS ships will take 5 days or less. LPD's and LHD's can take up to 10 days to complete. A baseline survey may require more time and should be worked out with the person performing your survey.

  • Q: Do we perform fit-testing?
A: Yes, we do perform qualitative and quantitative fit testing if a command RPPM is not available for more than 3 months.

  • Q: Do you test for mold?
A: Currently the NAVY does not test for mold but, we are available for mold prevention and remediation guidance.

  • Q: Do you provide sampling services?
A: Yes, we can provide sampling services for lead, asbestos, heavy metals, solvents, noise, etc. Contact NEPMU FIVE Industrial Hygiene division for more details.

Clinicians

Clinical guidance, including recognition, management and clinical isolation guidance are generally covered by CDC: CDC Clinical Overview

Clinical management for Fleet medical personnel can be found in the NMCFHPC Fleet Mpox Medical Guidance

Clinical guidance for MTFs can be found in the DHA Mpox Guidance Update_5Sept2024

Currently, neither mpox testing nor treatment are readily available in a forward deployed operational setting. Units should identify suspected cases, isolate them, and move them for care at an MTF when operationally feasible.
