PUBLIC HEALTH AND SURVEILLANCE

Threat Assessment

The Threat Assessment Department helps the Navy and Marine Corps maintain readiness and avoid preventable illness at home and on deployment. NEPMU-6 studies health risks in Asia and the Pacific and pass that information back to you and your command in the form of preventive measures you can use to avoid illness. Our services include the following:

  • Stool and blood parasite microscopy
  • Viral pathogen molecular testing (e.g. bioterror agents, Influenza, Norovirus)
  • Culture based bacterial ID and antibiotic susceptibility testing

The laboratory can acquire, as needed, specialized diagnostics not normally available in the United States (e.g., Dengue virus). The laboratory is also prepared to expedite the acquisition, packaging and shipping of appropriate specimens to higher level military and civilian reference laboratories as appropriate.

Web Resources
Clinicians

Clinical guidance, including recognition, management and clinical isolation guidance are generally covered by CDC: CDC Clinical Overview

Clinical management for Fleet medical personnel can be found in the NMCFHPC Fleet Mpox Medical Guidance

Clinical guidance for MTFs can be found in the DHA Mpox Guidance Update_5Sept2024

Currently, neither mpox testing nor treatment are readily available in a forward deployed operational setting. Units should identify suspected cases, isolate them, and move them for care at an MTF when operationally feasible.
