OCCUPATIONAL AUDIOLOGY AND HEARING CONSERVATION DIVISION

OEM Occupational Audiology and Hearing Conservation provides technical support and guidance for the Navy’s Hearing Conservation Program (HCP). The OEM Hearing Conservation Program Manager (HCPM) provides expert support to activities ashore and afloat and leads a team that provides technical management, training, and data analysis for the Navy HCP and the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System – Hearing Conservation (DOERHS-HC). The OEM Calibration Laboratory section provides technical and calibration services for audiometric and sound measuring equipment for Navy medical facilities and fleet units worldwide.

The OEM Hearing Conservation Program is the largest occupational medical program in the world dedicated to protecting personnel from the harmful effects of hazardous noise and preventing noise-induced hearing loss. Hearing loss and tinnitus are among the most prevalent service-connected and civilian occupational injury disabilities. Auditory fitness for duty is crucial for mission effectiveness, a safe environment, and an individual’s quality of life.

The OEM Calibration Laboratory is the only one of its kind in the Navy and provides a unique, specialized capability of calibrating, servicing and repairing approximately 5,000 pieces of equipment per year.

The OEM HCPM manages the Navy DOERHS-HC component to ensure over 400,000 hearing tests per year are accurately stored in the tri-service central Data Repository (DR ). The OEM HCPM uses this data to trend and analyze hearing loss and team with other public and occupational health specialties when necessary to provide consultation for field units.
