Endodontics

This 2-year program involves study of the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues. It encompasses the basic clinical sciences, including biology of the normal pulp, and the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp and associated periradicular conditions.

Completion of the program qualifies the resident for participation in the written portion of the American Board of Endodontics examination. After passing the written examination and conducting a practice limited to endodontics for an additional 2 years, the endodontist is eligible to participate in the clinical and oral examinations leading to Board certification.

The curriculum also includes military subjects that enable dental officers to undertake contingency roles and to perfect their skills in military leadership and personnel management.

Current Literature Seminar

Each month, the residents review the scientific literature for articles of interest to endodontics in 5 peer-reviewed journals. When an article is chosen for review, a resident writes an abstract that is placed in a database that is shared across the Navy Endodontics community.

Classical Literature Seminar

There are 28 separate classical literature seminars. The residents either chair these seminars or abstract classical articles for discussion during the seminar. They also prepare short reports on selected topics during the year. Each resident is expected to chair several seminars and direct discussion.

Research

Each resident is expected to complete a research project during the two year program. Approximately 3 hours each week are dedicated to this endeavor. The topic is selected by the resident and pertains to the field of endodontics. Assistance is provided by the staff mentor and the Research Department at NPDS.

Special Reports

All residents write an additional paper. This paper may be a review of their research topic, a clinical update, or a review of another topic of interest in endodontics. First year residents write a report on the history and philosophy of endodontics.
