Military Tropical Medicine Course

Eligibility 2027

MTM-Phase 1-in-Residence. Medical clinicians and support staff including physicians, nurses, allied health professions, hospital corpsmen and medics, veterinarians, and microbiologists from the joint force, interagency partners, and foreign military may apply. Priority is given to applicants in operational billets and for whom the course is an integral part of established training. Due to the inclusion of laboratory instruction, a protected academic setting, and networking opportunities, the in-residence iteration of MTM Phase 1 is encouraged over our Virtual option for applicants able to attend in-person. Applicants seeking to participate in MTM Phase 2 Field Missions are highly encouraged to complete MTM Phase 1-In-Residence688as opposed to the Virtual option.

MTM Phase1-Virtual. Medical clinicians and support staff including physicians, nurses, allied health professions, hospital corpsmen and medics, veterinarians, and microbiologists from the joint force, interagency partners, and foreign military may apply. The Virtual course is self-paced and runs from October to June annually. The virtual option is offered only to applicants unable to attend the in-residence iteration and does not include a laboratory component at this time. Beginning in FY27, students who completed MTM Phase 1-In-Residence will be prioritized for selection to MTM Phase 2 Field Missions over applicants who completed MTM Phase 1-Virtual. Virtual students are nevertheless encouraged to apply for MTM Phase 2 and will be selected if space/funding allows, on a case-by-case basis.

MTM-Phase 2 Field Mission. Individuals who have successfully completed MTM Phase 1 may apply for a 2-4 week practicum experience at one of our international field sites. Beginning in FY27, applicants who completed the in-residence iteration of the course will be prioritized for selection to MTM Phase 2 over individuals who completed Phase 1 virtually. Therefore, if an applicant wishes to participate in a field mission, they are highly encouraged to attend the in-residence iteration of MTM Phase 1. Applications must include Chain of Command approval to participate. . Phase 2 selection and mission assignment will occur on a rolling basis using selection criteria developed by MTM course director and if applicable, service point-of-contact (USA, USAF). Applicants are therefore encouraged to submit applications early in the application cycle (preferably by January) to ensure placement.
