NMR&D laboratories develop new technologies and treatments to protect, resuscitate, and care for combat casualties. They also develop materials, diagnostic tools and biometrics to enhance the health of Navy and Marine Corps personnel. NMR&D laboratories conduct epidemiologic, short term, and long-term studies on combat deployment injuries and casualties, risk factors, impacts, and outcomes.
NMR&D laboratories determine the bioeffects of, exposure limits for, and countermeasures for military relevant exposures including directed energy, blast, motion, acceleration, spatial disorientation, altitude, heat, cold, noise, environmental/atmospheric stressors and toxicity, and fatigue. NMR&D laboratories also develop detection, prophylactic, and therapeutic countermeasures against biological agents.
NMR&D laboratories address the physical, mental and cognitive health of our warfighters through conducting investigations in epidemiology, health outcomes, behavioral interventions, musculoskeletal injuries, environmental/endogenous stressors, and lifestyle factors that affect the health, readiness, and performance of our warfighters and their families.
Administratively, NMR&D laboratories are equipped and staffed to support and execute the research mission. Capabilities include grant writing and protocol development, as well as Institutional Review Board (IRB), Human Research Protections Program (HRPP), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance, and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation. Also supported are research administration and contracting, fiscal management, the execution of agreements, scientific editing and publishing, digital media, and technology transfers.
