OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSE (OHN) FUNDAMENTALS COURSE INFORMATION

The OHN fundamentals course will provide instruction on basic (routine) occupational health nursing and how it is practiced in the US Navy. The course is intended for new OHN's that do not have formal Occupational Health Nurse training or are new to the Navy Occupational Medicine program who will be practicing in an occupational medicine clinic or have significant occupational medicine-related workload. The course will cover history of occupational medicine, workplace hazards, risk communication, Navy Occupational Health programs, worksite visits, and available resources. This is not a board review course.

Location (River’s Edge Community Center/NEX, Bldg 256, (Class is held in the Conference Room) at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA campus):

Enter NMCP through the Main Gate at NMCP (preferably in left-most lane—marked in morning with orange traffic cones). Once through Main gate take an immediate left at 4-way stop. Then take next left at 3-way stop onto Williamson Drive. Follow Williamson Drive as it curves around the campus; name will change to Gendreau Road. Take a right onto Sterling Cook Road, then take the first right into parking lot. The River’s Edge Community Center (building has white façade with “RIVER’S EDGE” sign and is a single story) will be on your left as you turn onto Sterling Cook Road. Limited parking is available in front of the building, but do not park in parking spaces labeled for either “NEX Customer” or “Aquatic Center.” A large lot is located on the opposite side of the street for additional parking. The conference room is not in the main hospital buildings- if you find yourself in a multi-level building, you are in the wrong place.

Monday-Wednesday: 0800-1630

Thursday: 0700-1630

Friday: 0800-1200

Uniform of the day for military is NWU or service khaki (no flight suits). For civilians, business casual attire is appropriate. Students MUST bring steel-toed footwear for an industrial site visit during the course.

Food is available at the River’s Edge restaurant located in the same building as the conference room and a mini-mart exchange adjacent to the River’s Edge building. There is also a Galley in Bldg 2, 1st deck, a food court in Bldg. 3, 2nd deck with a Subway, Panda Express, White lotus sushi, Auntie Anne’s, and Dancing Goat Cafe. There is a mini-exchange with grab-n-go food and snack options next to the food court as well.

Lodging

The nearest military Lodging is available at the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (Portsmouth, VA). You can call and book directly (1-877-NAVY-BED).The nearest commercial lodging is also available at the Renaissance Portsmouth (757-673-3000) at 425 Water St. Portsmouth VA 23704. The Portsmouth area is part of the Integrated Lodging Program. The hotel must be booked in DTS under Preferred Commercial Lodging tab in order to get the government rate of $83.70.

Travel Information and Alternate Routes

The closest airport is Norfolk International Airport (ORF).

Please be aware that Hampton Roads has tolls all over the area and we encourage you not to take these routes. If you do receive a bill in the mail at later date, you can submit an amendment to your travel voucher.

Although it may take longer, alternate routes are available and they include: Route 13 Military Highway Gilmerton Bridge and the Interstate 64 (I-64) High Rise Bridge.
